Since June 2019, we’ve been researching the best baby cribs we could find and we narrowed down our list from 34 to just these ten cribs. We have a long list of items we needed to check to ensure we recommend to parents the safest baby cribs we could find in the market.

A crib is one of the essential investments for any family with a newborn. A crib will not only be the focal point of your baby’s nursery but also provide safe and comfortable sleeping space for your baby for many years to come. If you are not sure what crib to buy, we have done the research for you and listed the best cribs in the market today to suit every budget and style. To make the best crib purchase you need to consider the following factors:

Delta Children Emery 4-in-1 Convertible Baby Crib

How we ranked the best baby cribs in 2020

Safety: Consider buying cribs with JPMA (Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association) certification.

This means that the crib is tested for safety by an independent party and it meets or exceeds the safety regulations laid down by the ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials).

Make sure that the materials used to make the crib are free of toxic chemicals. Some cribs use finishing paint that has toxic chemicals like lead, phthalates, and more. You want to choose a crib with non-toxic finishing. The other thing is to make sure this is made from solid wood since some cribs are made from manufactured wood which emits Volatile Organic Compounds which can be harmful when your baby breathes them in. Look out for a crib with Greenguard Gold Certification. It will mean that the crib has been tested for more than 10,000 toxic chemicals and over 360 VOCs, and is thus toxin-free.

Convertibility: Since your baby will outgrow the crib soon, you want to choose a crib that can be changed into a bed for a toddler, daybed, or full-size bed. Most crib companies sell their conversion kits separately and sometimes, expensively. Make your decision keeping in mind the price of the conversion kit.

Additional crib features: modern cribs have nice additional features that will make bedtime a pleasant experience for both the parent and the baby. Check out below some of the features to look out for:

  • Adjustable mattress height- allows you to lower the mattress as your baby grows, to prevent them from climbing out of the crib.
  • Mattress support: a base with a metal base will hold better against a jumping toddler than wooden slats.
  • Drawers/changer: some modern cribs come with changers and drawers so you can keep the baby’s essentials within reach and make it convenient for you when it is time to change the diapers.
  • Casters: This is a preferred feature, which allows you to wheel the crib as required.
  • Teething rail: this special rail provides a teething toy for your baby and protects the rails of the crib from bite marks and paint from chipping.

Slat distance: the spaces between the slats should not be more than 2 3/8 inches (six centimeters). If the slats are wider apart, it poses a risk of the baby’s legs and arms getting trapped.

Now that you know what to look for in a crib, read through our reviews of the best cribs in the market below and you might just spot the one that is perfect for you.

After several hours of in-depth analysis and review, we reached out to 12 parents who have used several baby cribs to get their ideas on what they think is best in a baby crib.

Others factors we considered

  1. The material the cribs are made of: We only considered cribs that are made of toxic-free materials and finish. We did not consider any wood that may have volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with toxic gases.
  2. Certification and safety standards: Only those cribs that have been approved as safe by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) were considered.
  3. Small slat distance: Only cribs with less than 6 centimeters slat distance were considered. Bigger slat distance presents injury risk as the baby’s foot can get stuck in it.
