100% Secure From Hackers
Infant Optics DXR 8 uses a superior FHSS transmission technology invented in 1941 that utilizes the 2.4 GHz frequency band for secure and encrypted transfer of audio and video signals making it 100% hack-proof.
Though 2.4 GHz band is the same band used by wifi routers for wifi connection, Infant Optics DXR 8 is a non-connected monitor. Simply put, it does not connect to the internet. So, what is FHSS technology and how secure is it?
In 1941, a patent for FHSS technology was filed by two Americans as a way to transmit communications securely during world war II. This invention paved the way for all secure FHSS communication and by 2000s, Federal Communication Commission had allowed companies to operate FHSS-enabled devices in the unregulated 2.4 GHz frequency band.

There are just so many devices that operate on the 2.4 GHz band and interference is very common and using the spread spectrum technology enables Infant Optics to reduce interference while securing signals. The 2.4 GHz band is used to transfer digital signals in discrete numbers, 1 and 0, rather than continuous shapes like analog radio waves and the advantage is that digital signals can be easily encrypted. Any hacker would need to bypass the encryption.
What Makes Infant Optics Security Superior?
FHSS is a short form for Frequency-hopping spread spectrum (FHSS), a method of transmitting signals in one frequency band while switching/hopping from one channel to another. FHSS technology comes with all the benefits of digital signal transfer but in addition, it allows the signal to hop from one sub-frequency to another within the 2.4 GHz band as it moves the audio and the video signal from the transmitting baby unit to the receiving parent unit of the Infant Optics DXR 8.
The signal hops automatically and very quickly using a pseudo-random sequence known to both the transmitting unit and the receiving unit. It hops between 75 sub-frequencies within a period of 400 milliseconds! It also uses multiple access method in frequency hopping code making it hard for hackers to get a hold of a particular signal and decryption code to allow them to watch or listen to your baby.
In addition to this security feature, FHSS technology enables Infant Optics to utilize several channels within the 2.4 GHz frequency by avoiding those with interference. Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) which spreads the signal across wide channel.

Although not entirely impossible to hack Infant Optics DXR 8, it is very difficult for any hacker to succeed and they would probably look for another baby monitor that can be easily hacked, such as the wifi baby monitors.
It is important to note that FHSS technology does not provide encryption by itself but Infant Optics made built-in encryption. Superior Camera With Interchangeable Lens

The optical lenses are made of aluminum (great for night vision) and the zoom lens are telephoto lenses with great detail focus. Between 1977 to 1984, Minolta perfected what came to be known as interchangeable lenses in cameras. Infant Optics DXR 8 comes with an excellent telephoto lens which zooms inwards, making your baby to appear closer and enhancing every detail at a further distance. A telephoto lens allows you to focus on the baby’s details while placing the camera away fro the crib.

Infant Optics DXR 8 comes with one camera but it is expandable. This means you can add on up to three more cameras and the display will support it. In other words, Infant Optics supports up to four cameras. Each add-on camera is currently retailing less than the original price of Infant Optics. Decent Video and Image Quality
Though the pictures you get from Infant Optics are not in high definition, they are of impressive 720p quality. As a parent or caregiver, you are given control over the zoom, tilt or pan functionalities that you can control remotely using the parent display unit. With Infant Optics, you get your feed on a 3.5-inch display that is not the largest of all non-wifi secure baby monitors but does the job well.
For most parents, the images are great and wouldn’t change a pixel but some other parents prefer to go for high definition video or images. Parents have found the video and audio quality of this baby monitor great and should suffice a parent who doesn’t care much about the video quality. Some customers had the following to say:

More than 80% reported that the connection within their small or large homes worked perfectly. The manufacturer’s disclosed outdoor range is 700 ft but does not disclose its indoor range. Various tests have indicated that Infant Optics DXR 8 has up to 75 ft indoor range, about 6 walls rivaling VTech long-range audio baby monitors.
The indoor range is usually measured using the number of walls the audio and video signal can travel through has a considerably long-range, 700 ft. Lose of connection has been identified as a problem that can result as the monitor gets older. The range should be good for an average American family.

Infants Optics does not record
A common question we get here at 10BabyGear is, does Infant Optics record. The quick and correct answer is No. Infant Optics does not record as it does not have a micro-SD slot and does not save video clips to the cloud. Unlike baby monitors that can record a video of your baby or keep snapshots of your baby when you are away, Infant Optics does not record. Similarly, there is no Infant Optics baby monitor app, Infant Optics DXR 8 iPhone app or any smartphone app that connects to Infant Optics DXR 8 as it does not connect via the internet.

Short Battery Life Compared to Latest Brands
Even though the baby monitor comes with a replacement battery, customers have indicated that all their lithium-ion batteries do not last past 6 months. That means you need to buy replacement batteries every 6 months, Check Price). You can purchase this from Infant Optics or can get it anywhere as lithium-ion is available in most shops. The battery has also been reported to die at night, if not plugged in. I do not, therefore, encourage parents to keep the unit unplugged overnight. In addition, the charger uses 0.5 A, which makes it slow to charge as other standard chargers use 2.0 A and charge faster than Infant Optic’s battery charger.
The parent or the display unit of the Infant Optics DXR 8 uses lithium-ion batteries to power the 3.5-inch display. Even though the manufacturer claims that the battery lasts for 10 to 12 hours, tests indicate that Infant Optics DXR 8 can battery can last for up to 15.5 hours. The lithium-ion battery is rechargeable and can take about 4 hours to fully charge it.
Like other lithium-ion batteries, sometimes Infant Optics DXR 8 won’t charge. You may notice this since the infant optics baby monitor power button may not seem to be working when actually the battery has not charged when you thought you were charging. Indicator Light Too Bright
The indicator light on the parent unit is too bright for some parents.
Small screen size:
If you prefer a large screen baby monitor, Infant Optics may not be perfect for you. It has a medium size screen as most baby monitor screens range from 2.4 inches to 5 inches. Infant Optics DXR 8 has a 3.5-inch baby monitor display.
Night vision deteriorates over time
Parents have reported that Infant Optics has great night vision, in the first few months after purchase. However, after a few months, the quality of the images/videos from the camera are not as great (as shown in the picture below). Definitely, Infant Optics did not make it in our top baby monitors with night vision.

Infant Optics Has Excellent Night Vision
Humans are unable to see in low-light conditions and we rely on night vision technology to enable us to view objects at night. Infant Optics DXR 8 has built-in night vision technology with one low light sensor that automatically activates infrared (IR) light emission from 8 invisible IR LED lights. When it gets dark in the baby’s room, you won’t need to go to the baby’s room to adjust the camera. IR LED lights are perfect for the baby’s crib because it illuminates the baby, allowing the camera to ‘see’ and record the video stream while at the same time the baby cannot see the IR light because it is not visible in a human eye. The IR light has the capacity of illuminating up to 15 ft and as long as the baby is within the 15 ft. range, the camera will be able to capture the color images. The baby will, therefore, get a good sleep and not get disturbed by some glowing light. The imaging at night is great and has been praised as one of the best.

If you are experiencing unclear or grainy screen at low light conditions (at night), you are probably using either the zoom-in lens or the wide-angle lens. The default lens is best as it is made from aluminium and as explained above, metal-based lenses are best with night vision. Switch back to the original lens and see what that does. Temperature Sensor not very accurate
Having a reliable baby monitor with temperature sensors can come in handy for any parent purchasing a baby monitor to assist in SIDs and temperature-related risks. Infant Optics DXR 8 uses a precision temperature sensing technology that enables parents to view the temperature in the baby’s room either in Celsius or in Fahrenheit. The readings are shown on the screen (see the screen below for an example). The temperature sensor in the Infant Optics DXR 8 is located in the camera and all it should begin sensing the temperature as soon as the camera is powered. Some times the reading on the camera ar LL or HH and this basically says the temperature is too low (LL) or too high (HH).
To change the temperature from Celcius to Fahrenheit or vice versa, all you need to do is to hold down the short-cut button for at least three seconds and it will change the temperature. Some parents, especially those living in ventilated units have complained about the temperature accuracy of Infant Optics DXR 8. We’ll cover a sub-topic on Infant Optics temperature accuracy in the next section below.
Infant Optics Temperature Accuracy(HH, LL & Temperature Change from F to C or from C to F)
Are you wondering or surprised that the infant optics temperature is wrong or inaccurate? Several tests have indicated that Infant Optics temperature could have a deviation of 1 to 2 degrees as a result of heating caused by the camera that houses the temperature sensor, especially when it has been powered on for a long time. If the variation is more than 2 degrees, then read further.
What Could Be Wrong With The Infant Optics If The Temperature Readings Are Wildly Off?
Infant Optics can give you wildly wrong readings if you place it next to an AC or Air Vent unit as it will sense the cold and give you a reading indicating that the temperature is lower than it actually is in the entire nursery. This has made some parents to suggest that Infant Optics may not be the perfect camera to sense the temperature in enclosed HVAC rooms. If you have more than one camera, you can add one of the cameras away from the air vent unit and this can guide you on the readings at any time.
If are wondering how you can change your Infant Optics temperature from one unit to another, i.e from Celcius to Fahrenheit or Vice versa, follow the steps below:
- Power on the parent unit of your Infant Optics DXR 8
- Select the ‘Short-cut’ button shown in the diagram below and hold it down for at least three seconds.
You can also follow the instructions in the video below describing how you can go about changing the temperature settings on your Infant Optics DXR 8. You’ll see the temperature units on the display change from one to another. If you see LL on your Infant Optics display, it means that the temperature is too low and if you see Infant Optics display showing HH, it means that the temperature is too high in your baby’s room. Again, the temperature being displayed is that of your baby’s nursery and not of the camera.
Please note that all temperature sensing technology detects any heat in the surrounding so you need to mount your camera in a place that is far from any electronics that may be emitting heat.
